Zaragoza draws many travellers recently to witness its wealth of history from 2,000 years ago. In particular, Nuestra Señora del Pilar Basilica (Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in English), the first church built and by far world’s largest, dedicated to Virgin Mary in history.
Built between 1681 and 1872, the architecture, which can be seen from the nearby Ebro River, is a large rectangle with a nave and two aisles. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is one of two minor basilicas in the city of Zaragoza, and is co-cathedral f the city alongside the nearby La Seo Cathedral.
I personally prefer to view it from the square during night-time for its strong contrast in the dark sky, that brings out the true beauty of this magnificent masterpiece.
Next time when you are in Barcelona or Madrid, take the extra mile to Zaragoza to witness such great creation of mankind. High speed AVE from Barcelona to Zaragoza takes barely 2 hours. It’s located in between Barcelona and Madrid.
The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is also known as “a jewel of Baroque Art”.
